You know the symbols of these places by heart: the stone cross in the cemetery, the concrete silhouette of the water tower, the hunting rifle waiting in the hallway. They have stood in the exact same spot for generations, radiating that heavy certainty that everything is already decided before you even arrive. Between empty fields and the dense, rustling walls of corn, a youth grows up that refuses to fit into this rigid framework.

Strange Beings in a Strange Land shows what happens when you have to grow up in this environment. Dayan Visser does not use his camera from a distance, but looks from within at his own generation. The photographs do not show a romanticized rural belief, but the exploration of one’s own limits. It’s about taking back control and breaking down rules you never asked for.
