Twenty years ago, Maison Margiela opened a store in Ebisu. Not in a commercial district, not in a flagship location, but in a converted electrical factory on a quiet residential street in Tokyo. That decision said something about who they were. So did staying.

The store at 2-8-13 Ebisu Minami has been running for two decades now, with some of the same team members who were there from the start. To mark the anniversary, MaisonMargiela/folders goes back through its history: The people, the Tabi collectors and locals who kept coming back, the neighborhood that became the backdrop for everything the brand built in Japan.

This store is of huge significance to us. It retains the memory of how we first appeared to the world. The location of Ebisu itself, the community surrounding the store, and unconventional but intentional decisions to repurpose existing features speak to the most formative elements of our identity.
